Best Multigenerational Trip

Wondering what to get the kids and grandkids for Christmas? There’s no better gift than the gift of travel and shared adventures. Here at Knowmad Adventures, a company dedicated to creating custom travel experiences in South America, we believe that travel makes better people, and better people make a better and more compassionate world. We also know that travel and shared experiences bond people together and make better relationships; and authentic, close relationships are the key to a full and happy life. Helping people bond with their loved ones is one of the greatest joys of my job, and why I love putting together custom, multigenerational trips to South America.

From building an appreciation for nature and wildlife to building an appreciation for different cultures, traditions, and ways of life, I strongly believe that traveling to South America can be an incredibly transformative experience for children (and adults for that matter!) of all ages, and that’s the greatest gift you can ever give.

Charter a boat in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands Travel
Galapagos Islands Knowmad Adventures Galapagos Islands Travel

There are a handful of excellent, 16-passenger ships in the Galapagos that are ideal for chartering for a larger family group. You’ll find options in a variety of different price ranges from the more budget-friendly to luxury class vessels (and everything in between). Imagine watching your grandkids snorkel with sea lions, penguins, and sea turtles, and then stand next to a tortoise twice the little ones’ size and amongst colonies of dozens of iguanas. The Galapagos is where this can happen, and while an extremely fun vacation it is also educational for all ages. It’s the best place to not only teach your kids and grandkids compassion and respect for wildlife, but also learn about evolution in one of the key places that led to Darwin forming his theories of natural selection and then evolution. Knowmad traveler Monica said of her trip with her family, “The Galapagos were amazing! We cannot say enough about it.  It actually has changed my life. Swimming with sea turtles changed my life! Seeing my son swim with sea lions changed my life! Seeing my daughter proudly standing next to an Ecuadorean flag on the boat, claiming her heritage – changed my life. Sharing all of these things as well as the most perfect sunset imaginable with my husband – changed my life.”

Visit Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley, Peru

Our favorite family trips are those that expose kids to ways of life very different from their own, teaching them to grow into conscious, empathetic, and globally aware citizens. While it’s important to strive to leave a better world for our kids, it’s just as if not more important to leave better kids for our world. Allow them to learn from these different ways of life as they engage with local communities and gain a new perspective on their own life. There’s no better place to do this than Peru. In our Classic Machu Picchu itinerary, you’ll spend the entire morning with the Amaru indigenous community. This visit is very much an engaging cultural exchange, as we feel it’s important when entering someone’s home to not be there simply as a spectator. You will head out to their farmland to learn about their farming practices, and the plants that they harvest to create bright dyes which turn into beautiful weavings. You can also visit and make a donation to the school. Jenn, a Knowmad traveler who visited with her three children said,

“The experiences we crave are those that educate and inspire us all to continue acts of kindness wherever we may go. Our hearts grow, our minds widen and our souls deepen. These Amaru children were precious and wondrous.”

Tierra Patagonia

Tierra Patagonia Travel
Tierra Patagonia Knowmad Adventures Patagonia Family Travel

The rugged natural beauty of the Patagonian landscape goes beyond words and expectations; Granite towers thrust some 6,000 feet from the expansive plains are dotted with glacially-formed turquoise lakes. This pristine beauty comes to its height in Chile’s Torres Del Paine National Park, which contains vast networks of trails to access thousands of acres of wilderness and wildlife. What more could you want in a destination to explore with your family? Tierra Patagonia, an all-inclusive, choose-your-own-adventure lodge nestled on the glistening shores of Lake Sarmiento really goes above and beyond when it comes to personalization, flexibility, and creating a home away from home for family groups. They have many full-day and half-day excursion options to choose from. From short and long hikes to horseback riding, biking, and vehicle-based excursions, everyone in the family is sure to find something that gets them excited. Tierra is also phenomenal for wildlife viewing, so the little ones will be in awe of the herds of guanacos, tiny armadillos, and other animals found just outside their door. The cherry on top is that they offer teen rates and child rates that are less than a third of the adult price. If able to go in October, April, or May, Tierra’s a real steal with their mid-season rates that bring a 4-night all-inclusive stay for a child down to less than $1000!

Glaciers of Patagonia AND Wildlife & Waterfalls of the Jungle

Iguazu Falls
Knowmad Adventures Travel Iguazu Falls Custom Travel

When it comes to Argentina, you can take a boat ride through the jungle and visit the largest waterfall system in the world; stare up in awe at the massive Perito Moreno Glacier, which is roughly as tall as a 15-story building and covering an area the size of Buenos Aires; and dive into the culture, food, tango, and soccer of Buenos Aires all in one trip. Take a look at this family-friendly 8-day adventure, Argentina Highlights: Buenos Aires, Patagonia + Iguazú Falls. Argentina is also fantastic for younger kids who may not be quite up for the lengthy travel times and activity level required for Torres Del Paine, on the Chilean side of Patagonia. You don’t need to be overly active to experience the beauty of Patagonia on the Argentine side, and Calafate is just over a 3-hour flight from Buenos Aires.

Brazil’s Coast

Paraty City Tour Brazil Trips

Refugio Mamangua Brazil Travel Brazil's Hidden Beaches Knowmad Adventures

From teaching your kids to respect and love nature to appreciating different cultures, Brazil has it all. In our Hidden Beaches of Brazil: Costa Verde + Rio De Janeiro itinerary, your family will explore the cobblestone streets of a colonial port town rich in history, swap stories with local fisherman in a remote village, kayak or stand-up-paddleboard to secret coves and deserted beaches, and visit an award-winning art installation turned community project in Rio, started by local youth as a way to escape the reality & violence of their communities. Consider a stay Refugio Mamangua, a simple yet comfortable and special property located in a tropical fjord. Here you’ll get the opportunity to experience the daily life of the Caiçara community and connect with nature at this small, 10-room property with no electrical power and beautiful starry night skies. You’ll rack up hours of quality time with the family, away from the smart phones and iPads that we’re all often too glued to in our daily lives.
