Just Back from Antarctica: Crossing the Circle & Exploring Patagonia

Exploring Antarctica with Knowmad Adventures

Antarctica was always on Dennis’ bucket list. I went along knowing that he really wanted to go. Only once the trip was booked did I actually start doing my own research. The more I read, the more fascinating Antarctica seemed and the more excited I became. One will see things they have never seen before; they will be amazed by the unbelievable and beautiful landscapes, the vastness, the stillness, and the pristine nature of the region. One needs to see Antarctica to appreciate how splendid, majestic, and almost surreal it is. The wildlife was spectacular and plentiful. Whales and seals swam right up to the zodiac, where we could practically touch them. The penguins walked right up to us.

Exploring Antarctica by zodiac

Krista was really great in helping us navigate the different boat and expedition options, helping us choose what best suited our interests. We were so happy she guided us to Quark Expeditions, their Crossing the Antarctic Circle itinerary, and the Ultramarine ship choice. It was not like a cruise at all.

A favorite was taking a helicopter and landing on a pristine area where no man had ever been; we could truly appreciate the majesty of the area. I loved placing my foot in snow that had never been touched by any human in history. We went kayaking, walked on ice floes, and even did a polar plunge. While larger ships do not typically allow landings, we went exploring by zodiac disembarking frequently, getting to walk on the continent. The up-close views of the area, access to the region on this ship, and expedition were incredible. The food was also excellent; there was even a chef who made fresh bread daily, and the dining manager made sure all our needs were met.

The Ultramarine was great: well-equipped with amenities like a spa and gym. They had a range of international guides and staff, our cabin was roomy and comfortable, and we had a chance to visit the bridge and sit in the captain’s chair.

Antarctica Ultramarine Excursions

We’re so glad we decided to cross the Antarctic Circle, as it was really special. It’s incredible to think that this is something that has been done by very few in world history. Celebrating it with champagne on the deck of the Ultramarine, surrounded by pristine beauty, is something we won’t forget.

Combining Antarctica and Patagonia into one trip works great. I really enjoy hiking so stopping off at El Chaltén. Hiking Laguna de los Tres and the base of Mount Fitz Roy was spectacular. We also walked on the Perito Moreno Glacier and witnessed it calving off massive ice chunks.

This is a trip for people looking for an extraordinary and unique adventure. It’s for people looking for experiences you can’t have anywhere else in the world, where few people have gone before.

All three of our trips with Knowmad have been exciting and exceeded our expectations and we’ll be taking our fourth trip to Peru later this year. Krista listens to what we really enjoy and crafts itineraries to really reflect our interests. The local guides have all been excellent. All the expedition leaders were well informed, helpful, and exceptional.”
