Itinerary Overview

Lake Titicaca is both majestic and mythical. At over twelve thousand feet, the highest navigable lake in the world juxtaposes the sweeping dry altiplano, acts as frontier to Bolivia, and blends to horizon at the feet of Andean peaks. It is also home to a variety of colorful and unique indigenous communities whose strong traditions will intrigue and impress as you explore the cradle of the Inca civilization.

Lake Titicaca and Cultures of Peru

Leaving Cusco you will fly over the altiplano and into the mountains. Visit the charming town of Lampa and after a short and scenic drive, arrive at your lakeside hotel for a relaxing evening. Enjoy stunning views of the highest navigable lake in the world.

DAY 2  Cultures of Titicaca – Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island

You’ll be picked up after breakfast and enjoy a beautiful drive out of town onto a remote peninsula where Andean communities remain unchanged. At Llachon you’ll descend to the pier and take a Titicaca-style boat to the rarely visited Uros Titinos Islands, which float upon the reeds that the Uros people rely on for food and transportation as well. Also visit the Quechua people of Isla Taquile enjoying a traditional lunch in a family restaurant before returning to your lakeside hotel.

DAY 3 Puno – Lima

Weather & When to Go to Lake Titicaca

This trip takes place mostly in the Peruvian highlands. Throughout the year the average temperature is in the mid-50s °F (10-12 °C) and does not fluctuate greatly. Evenings are cooler. There are primarily two seasons: wet and dry. December through March sees much more precipitation than other times of the year and is the less visited season. As Peru has three distinct climate zones, if you are interested in combining this trip with a visit to the jungle or the coastal areas please inquire for more weather details.

Prior to your departure, you are provided a detailed pre-trip information packet including a recommended pack list, information about the regions you’ll be visiting, suggested readings, up-to-date health information including any recommended vaccinations and more.

DAY 2 Cultures of Titicaca – Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island

You’ll be picked up after breakfast and enjoy a beautiful private van ride out of town onto a remote peninsula where Andean communities remain unchanged. At Llachon you’ll descend to the pier and take a Titicaca-style boat to the rarely visited Uros Titinos Islands, which float upon the reeds that the Uros people rely on for food and transportation as well.

Continue on to Taquile Island where Quechua people retain a strong cultural identity and rarely intermarry outside of the island. Visit our friend Alejandro for a typical meal of delicious products harvested locally and to learn of the islands lifestyle and traditions.
